What is Bre-B in Colombia?

Have you heard the term Bre-B but still don’t know what it means? You’re not alone.

Across Colombia, people are talking about this new system, but it’s not always easy to understand. Is it a digital wallet? A government app? A new way to send money?

Let’s break it down.

Bre-B stands for Billetera de Registros Electrónicos – Banco de la República in Spanish. It’s Colombia’s big step into the future of digital money. It’s not just another fintech app, it’s a national platform that connects banks, wallets, and people. Bre-B is a built-in payment system within your Colombian bank’s or wallet’s existing digital services. It brings interoperability across financial platforms in Colombia.

This blog will explain what Bre-B is, why it matters, how it works, and how you can use it. Whether you’re a Colombian citizen or someone living abroad, Bre-B is something you need to know about.

What is Bre-B?

Bre-B is Colombia’s official instant payment system, launched by the central bank.

Bre‑B began allowing people to register their “keys” (llaves) on July 14, 2025 via the digital platforms of more than 39 banks and wallets (Nequi, Daviplata and Movii), this is called the “Zona Bre‑B”.

The system becomes fully operational in mid‑September 2025. From that point, users can send and receive money instantly, 24/7, between any participating banks or wallets.

Bre‑B works by using virtual identifiers called “llaves.” You register one using your cédula number, phone number, email, or a code assigned by your bank. Each llave links to a specific account.

Breb-B Key features

Real-time transfers: money moves in under 20 seconds, anytime and any day

Free transfers for users: no fees during the first three to four years

High security: transacting via key (llave) protects your full account details. Bre‑B uses central infrastructure managed by Banco de la República and fintech partners.

Max transaction limit: Currently set at COP 11,552,000 per transfer (approximately USD 2,765). Banks may set lower limits for security.

How does Bre‑B work?

Bre‑B connects banks, wallets, and fintech apps so money moves across them in real time. These following steps apply only to Colombian citizens:

Register your unique keys or 'llaves' to use Bre-B in Colombia

1. Register your unique key (“llave”)

National ID number (Cedula), phone, email, or a custom alphanumeric code.

That key links to your account.

2. Send money

From you Colombian bank or digital wallet, choose Bre‑B

Enter the recipient’s key and the amount OR use a QR code to scan the receiver’s key.

3. Receive money

✅ The sender only needs your registered key

Not your full account number

Which entities are connected?

Colombian banks, cooperatives, microfinance institutions, and Colombian digital wallets are all linked.

174 entities are already participating as of this blog’s writing, including Nequi, Daviplata, Bancolombia, Davivienda, Banco de Bogotá, and more.

Tips to stay safe using Bre-B

1. Use only official apps or websites to sign up or manage your key.

2. Never share your key, passwords, or auth codes with anyone even if they claim to be from Bre‑B.

3. Set daily transaction limits (offered by some banks) to control risk. You can also instantly block your account if you notice suspicious activity.

4. Never click links in SMS, WhatsApp, or unsolicited messages related to Bre‑B.

5. Ignore messages claiming Bre‑B requires approval via link. Bre‑B never requires you to click anything to finalise transfers.

🚨 Some institutions are warning about fraudulent links:

Bancolombia has called the scheme fraudulent, advising:

“If you get that message, just ignore it. It’s a scam. Never share your credentials or accept transfers via link.”

Nequi issued alerts too, stating:

“Register your Bre‑B key only through the official app—not via SMS, social media, WhatsApp, or phone calls”

Why Bre‑B matters for Colombia

Bre‑B is a turning point in Colombia’s financial system. It brings several key benefits:

Boosts financial inclusion

Cash still dominates nearly 80% of daily transactions in Colombia. Bre‑B makes digital payments accessible to millions who lack bank accounts or use local payment services. It lowers barriers and widens access across urban and rural areas.

Promotes interoperability and competition

Before Bre‑B, most transfers stayed within the same bank or app. Now anyone can send money across any connected platform instantly. This opens the market to new fintech companies and gives users more choices.

Eliminates transfer costs

Interbank fees in Colombia could reach ~COP 7,980 (about USD 2). Bre‑B abolishes these fees for the first few years. That saves everyday users and small businesses money on low-value transfers.

Speeds up payment processing

Transfers once took hours or days, especially after business hours. Bre‑B delivers funds in seconds, at any time. That improves cash flow for businesses and convenience for everyone.
