Best budgeting Apps in Australia

Moving to Australia means learning a new financial system from scratch, often while sorting out housing, work and a new community all at once. Finding the best budgeting app in Australia for your situation takes some of that pressure off.

Start with a goal, not an app

Every app works better once you know what it’s for. Common goals for newly arrived migrants include:

  • 𖧹 Sending money to family overseas
  • 𖧹 Saving a deposit for a car or home
  • 𖧹 Paying for a relative’s education back home
  • 𖧹 Starting a business in Australia
  • 𖧹 Building an emergency fund

Once the goal is clear, tracking your spending becomes a lot easier to stick with.

The best budgeting apps in Australia right now

A few well known names from previous years, including Pocketbook and MoneyBrilliant, have both shut down. Here’s what’s actually live and working for Australians today.

AppBest for Cost
Frollo Open banking, automatic categoriesFree
WeMoney Budgeting plus a free credit scoreFree, paid tier available
PocketSmith Forecasting your bank balanceFree tier, paid plans available
Goodbudget Envelope budgeting, shared with a partnerFree, paid tier available
MoneySmart Free government calculators and guidesFree

FROLLO

Frollo connects to your accounts through the Consumer Data Right, Australia’s government regulated open banking system. That’s a safer way to share your data than older apps that asked for your online banking password directly.

It automatically sorts transactions into categories and shows spending across every linked account in one place.

Availability: iOS and Android.

WEMONEY

WeMoney links your accounts through open banking and adds something most budgeting apps don’t: free monthly credit score updates from Equifax and Experian. It also flags forgotten subscriptions and recurring payments.

The free version covers budgeting, bill tracking and net worth.

Availability: iOS and Android.

POCKETSMITH

PocketSmith stands out for forecasting, it can project where your bank balance will sit in three, six or twelve months based on current spending. It connects with more than 12,000 financial institutions worldwide, useful if you still hold accounts overseas.

The free plan covers one bank feed and six months of history.

Availability: iOS, Android and web.

GOODBUDGET

Goodbudget uses the envelope method. You split your income into virtual envelopes for things like rent, groceries and savings, without carrying physical cash.

Couples can share a budget across two phones, so both people see what’s left in each envelope.

Availability: iOS and Android.

MONEYSMART

MoneySmart is run by the Australian Government, not a private company, so there’s nothing to sign up for and nothing being sold. It offers free calculators and guides on budgeting, debt, super and retirement planning.

It’s a toolkit rather than a tracking app, so it works best alongside one of the apps above.

Is it safe to link your bank to a budgeting app in Australia?

Apps that use the Consumer Data Right, including Frollo and WeMoney, connect through a government regulated system rather than asking for your banking password. They can read your transaction data, but they can’t move your money or make payments on your behalf.

That’s different from older apps that used screen scraping, where you handed over your actual login details. If an app asks for your password directly rather than redirecting you through your bank’s own login screen, that’s worth a second look before you sign up.

Or your bank could be the budgeting app for you

If sharing your login through a third party app doesn’t sit right with you, that’s a reasonable call. Most major banks now build budgeting tools directly into their own app.

Bendigo: Online Budget Planner

CommBank: Spend Tracker and Insights

NAB: Budget planner calculator

Westpac: Budget planner

Which one should you pick?

Frollo or WeMoney suit automatic bank syncing, both are free and built for the Australian market. Goodbudget’s envelope system works better if you’d rather keep a hands off, manual approach. Managing money across two countries at once calls for PocketSmith, built for exactly that. And if you just want free guidance without downloading anything, MoneySmart covers the basics

There’s no single best budgeting app in Australia for everyone, it comes down to whether you want automatic syncing or a hands off approach.
